More on Food Photography
A while back I posted an article about food photography. I hadn’t realised until now but the amount of photo’s I’ve posted (and the number of posts) on this site has dropped significantly and I think I’ve worked out why.
I’m intimidated by all the excellent food photography out there. I’ve got a bunch of photo’s in my camera that I haven’t bothered to download yet cause they don’t compare to what I’m seeing on other sites.
So I’ve been doing some reading around the net and got a few idea. Some of them are simple and easy to do but I think the biggest improvement I can make is in the lighting and that’s going to take some money.
At the moment I’m using a Fuji Finepix A500 which takes a damn nice happy snap, but makes things tricky doing something like food photography. I’ve found using the macro mode improves things quite a bit but the built in flash is where I’m getting let down.
My budget won’t stretch to even a semi-professional set up at the moment so I’m going to try using a halogen desk lamp and turning the flash off and see if that will improve my results. Stay Tuned.
If your looking at wanting to improve your food photography then here are some links that I found today:
- Food Styling (choice magazine Australia)
- Still Life With
- Digital Photography School
- Strobist (all about lighting, not so much about food)
Update: Watch this video at Youtube, After I saw it I made a vow not to take my food photography so seriously in the future.

Thanks for these links. I am more a writer than a photog, and my blog shows that! I am learning that lighting is everything, but it is intimidating to see the beautiful pix that other food bloggers post. I hope one day to be able to capture the look and feel of a delicious dish I made that will make my readers’ mouths water!
